- The manufacture of glass uses energy in the extraction and transportation of the raw materials, and during processing as materials have to be heated together to a very high temperature. Large amounts of fuel are used and the combustion of these fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide - a greenhouse gas. Typically a ton of glass packed will liberate between 500 and 900kg of CO2.
- The combustion of gas for energy production also releases large amounts of pollutant gases such as sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen.
- Glass is non-biodegradable, so if its not recycled, it remains in the environment, disposed of hopefully, in land-fills where it will eventually degrade back to its component parts (in a million years).
